Spaniard Miguel Astarloza won the 16th stage after the tour spent the day in the Alps. The stage saw Astarloza conquer the 22.6km climb to the summit of the Col du Petit Saint Bernard. His compatriot Alberto Contador retained the overall leader's yellow jersey and was 1' 37" ahead of seven-time winner Lance Armstrong.
