South Africa's top athletics official admitted on Saturday that a gender test was carried out on athlete Caster Semenya before the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last month, but said the results are not known.

Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene said he lied about the tests to protect Semenya's privacy.

Chuene previously claimed that no tests had been conducted on the 18-year-old athlete, who has been the subject of a sex row since winning a gold medal in the 800m race;

A probe into her gender was announced by the sport's governing body the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) shortly before the race.
