German Chancellor Angela Merkel was formally sworn in on Wednesday for her second four-year term as chancellor. She also takes up duties as the head of the new centre-right coalition. She was previously aligned with the Social Democrats, but switched to conservative party support by taking the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) on board.

"I accept the result and I thank you for your trustn" said Merkel after she aws formally sworn in and presented with bouquets of flowers at the Reichstag parliament building.

Out of the 612 MPs present on Wednesday, some 323 voted for her and 285 voted against her.

Part of her campaign has been to cut taxes by 24 billion euros, even though this puts Europe's biggest economy in breach of European Union rules.

Merkel plans to hold her first cabinet meeting Wednesday afternoon.
