There is currently a big debate going on in France over the issue of 'what it means to be French'. The discussions were started some years ago by a Paris-based think-tank, the Institut Montagne, They became the focus of attention when the government opened a debate on the definition of national identity. Intially there seemed to be two issues at stake which gradually merged into one. But, in an exclusive RFI interview, François Rachline, General Director of the Institut Montagne, claims they should remain separate.
