Orthodox priest who criticised Islam is slain

A Russian Orthodox priest who was an outspoken critic of both Islam and ultra-nationalist groups was shot dead in his Moscow church by a masked assassin, investigators said Friday. The man had reportedly contacted the federal security services several times over death threats.

Thousands homeless, roads under six feet of water

The heaviest rain in two years on Wednesday left thousands of people homeless and roads flooded after storm systems failed to cope with the downpour. Water levels were receding on Thursday and despite the high number of homeless, no casualties were reported.

Ten killed in suicide blast during Karzai inauguration

A suicide bomber has killed 10 civilians in southern Afghanistan, the second attack on the same day President Hamid Karzai was sworn into office. The bombing in Uruzgan province followed a suicide attack in neighbouring Zabul, which killed two US soldiers.
