UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says that he is "deeply disappointed" by the refusal of Myanmar's military rulers to allow him to see Aung San Suu Kyi. The country's top leader, Than Shwe, told him that he could not see the democracy campaigner because she is currently on trial.

US drone kills at least six in Pakistan

An unmanned US missile killed at least six people when it hit the hideout of a Taliban commander in Pakistan's tribal belt Friday. Some reports put the death toll from the strike on allies of Islamist leader Baitullah Mehsud as high as 11.

Around 4,000 US troops have been deployed in south Afghanistan for air and ground assaults intended to target Taliban strongholds. The US military has announced that a US soldier was captured by the Taliban in the country on Tuesday.
