In barely ten years, Tuareg music has managed to rise up from a minority sound to a staple feature of the global scene. Its driving force has been the movement’s emblematic pioneer, Tinariwen, who served as a model for the next generation with their particular blend of plaintive blues-rock that sounds as arid as the desert that inspires it. Although the political context that sparked off their original outpouring has changed since fragile peace put an end to the Tuareg rebellion, this increasingly sedentary people remains deeply attached to its culture, language and alphabet, and in particular to its desert – a land without borders that stretches from Algeria to Niger taking in parts of Mali and Libya.
