South Sudan ceasefire negotiator is optimistic

Reuters/Zohra Bensemra

Authorities in southern Sudan say a ceasefire signed with a renegade general on the eve of the referendum is holding, and voting has gone on smoothly in Jonglei state, which was earlier affected by clashes. General George Athor had taken up arms after losing the race for governor of the oil-rich Jonglei state in elections last April. Athor accused the dominant Sudan People’s Liberation Movement of rigging the vote. Clashes between his troops and government southern SPLA government soldiers had cast a shadow on preparations on the vote. The Anglican Archbishop of Sudan Daniel Deng Bul Yak mediated a ceasefire between the government of Southern Sudan and Athor. He believes there will be a lasting end to the conflict, he said on his return from meeting the general.
