In Nigeria, authorities have detained five men with alleged links to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Four of the suspects were arrested in the northern city of Kano. The fifth was arrested in a separate raid. Security sources say they were involved in the kidnapping of a German engineer in January. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, has not been known to operate in Nigeria so far. William Jordan, an expert on security in the Sahel, told RFI this group could be active in Nigeria.
