Eritrean opposition wants urgent action to end to refugee trafficking in eastern Sudan
Issued on: Modified:
The Eritrean opposition is calling for urgent action to stop abductions of refugees in eastern Sudan. According to the UN, 551 Eritreans went missing at Shagarab refugee camp last year alone. There are reports that human traffickers often smuggle them across Sudan's border with Egypt. The UN refugee agency blames the abuctions on local tribesmen who operate in Eastern Sudan and in the Sinai. UNHCR also says criminal gangs are involved. RFI reached Woldeyesus Ammar, the spokesman of the Eritrean People's Democratic Party. He says the victims of trafficking are subjected to horrific abuse.
