A military aircraft carrying Nelson Mandela's remains took off from Pretoria's Waterkloof air force base on Saturday, en route to his native Eastern Cape province where he will be buried in the village of Qunu, where he spent his childhood.

On Friday Qunu was preparing to bury its most famous son and the media were getting ready to cover the historic occasion.
