A solemn ceremony will mark the moment in downtown Dallas when, 50 years ago today, US president John F Kennedy was assassinated by a lone gunman. A moment of silence will be held and church bells will toll throughout the city. Great sadness and shock overcame America 50 years ago. Since then, doubts as to exactly what happened that day have become lodged in the American psyche.
