Earthquake in Myanmar kills 75

At least 75 people were killed in an earthquake measuring 6.8 in Myanmar, officials said on Friday. Tremors were felt almost 800 kilometres away in Bangkok. More than 100 people are thought to have been injured and at least 240 buildings had collapsed. The authorities said there were still trying to reach remote areas.

The quake hit the country late on Thursday and could be felt across the border in Thailand and in parts of Vietnam and China.

Officials said they were still trying to reach remote areas and find injured people in affected areas. Residents across the region fled their homes while hospitals and schools were evacuated.

The quake is not thought to have created significant damage to infrastructure in the affected areas of Kengtung and Tachileik. Although many buildings were cracked and some water supplies disrupted.

Thailand’s meteorological department said on Friday that it had registered six large aftershocks after the initial quake.
