Each year over 1.3 million people die in car accidents across the world. India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world, despite the fact that its population is smaller than neighbouring China and there are more vehicles on US roads than in India. Most states in the country have lax laws on drink driving and offenders are at most fined or simply let off. But now campaigners are demanding stricter laws that include a jail term for drink driving.
