Put on your thinking caps … it’s time for the quiz. You’ll hear great music and listener’s letters, too … don’t miss it!
You’ve surely noticed by now we’ve been experimenting with the Sound Kitchen recipes … on Saturdays, at 5:16 universal time, tune in to hear if you are amongst the week’s winners. The winners names are here on our website, too. Look for Short Features / Sound Kitchen Winners.
Tune in on Sundays, at 4:22, 5:52 and 7:22 universal time, for the quiz question ... and whatever else is cooking up in the Sound Kitchen.
I have wonderful news! “The Sound Kitchen Listener’s Cookbook” will finally become a reality. First it will be put on-line, and then we’ll get to work on a printed version. The web team has asked for photos of your prepared dishes, as well as of you. So if you sent in a recipe, get back into your kitchen and get cooking … but before you “tuck in” to your fabulous dish, take a minute to take a picture or two of the final product. And of yourself, too!
The projected date for the on-line version of the cookbook is May. Yippee!
This week’s question is about the North American black bear, the Ursus Americanus. I just read a fascinating article about the black bears ability to heal during hibernation. For the past 25 years, a group of U-S scientists have been tracking 1000 black bears – using radio collars - to learn about their health and behavior. The scientists note when a bear is wounded, by gunshots or arrows from hunters, or from bites by other bears or predators – and were surprised to discover that the bear’s wounds, even if infected and inflamed, healed during their long winter nap. There was minimal scarring, the damaged skin re-grew, and many of the bears even grew hair from newly formed hair follicles, at the site of their injuries!
One of the researchers said he thinks there are implications for human medical research … maybe to help in developing treatments for slow-healing skin wounds in malnourished, hypothermic, diabetic and elderly patients.
So, I want you to send in any little bit of information you have on bears … how long do they hibernate? What is their expected life span? How long is the gestation period for a Mama Bear? You can even send in bear trivia … how did the Teddy Bear come to be named Teddy? Which native people pray to bears? I’d love to have original bear stories, or anecdotes. How about a bear joke? The field is open …have fun!
