Loznitsa records Maidan protests for Cannes
Russia takes a knock in Sergei Loznitsa’s documentary Maidan, in selection but not in competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Loznitsa plants his camera in Independence Square in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev during the Maidan protests earlier this year.
Peacefully, all sorts of folk, including soldiers, medical aid workers and clergy, appear in front of the camera on stage addressing the huge crowds.
Each time the camera position is changed, a new scene is created with varying types of people movement.
Some walk to and fro in front of the camera, others serenade it with the national anthem. A hymn to solidarity, to resistance, to Ukraine’s independence.
