For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 9675 kHz on the 31m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

You can also hear our programs on WRMI ( and WRN ( These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

This week’s quiz: On 5 November, it was Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. I asked you to write in and tell me who Guy Fawkes was, and how Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated in Britain.

The answer is: Guy Fawkes was a member of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, a failed conspiracy by a group of English Roman Catholics to assassinate the Protestant King James I and replace him with a Roman Catholic head of state. They planned on blowing up the House of Lords while King James was inside. Guy Fawkes’ job was to guard the explosives beneath the House of Lords, but the plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was caught and arrested. And executed.

To celebrate the failure of the plot, people lit bonfires around London. And it soon became an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure – and became, as you may have guessed, a focus for anti-Catholic sentiment.

Today the anti-Catholic sentiment is pretty much gone. The bonfires are still there, but the effigies that are burned tend to be today’s political leaders. This year, at one of Britain’s biggest Guy Fawkes celebrations in Lewes, effigies were burned of British Prime Minister Teresa May and US President – elect Donald Trump.

The winners are: RFI Listeners Club members Solomon Fessahazion from Asmara, Eritrea, Ferhat Bezazel from Ain Kechera, Algeria, and Hans Verner Lollike from Hedehusene, Denmark. From the Kumi Central RFI Listeners Club in Kampala, Uganda, Mark Okurut Ongole is a winner this week, as is Mrs Sabina, from the RFI Friends Radio Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh.

Congratulations winners!
