Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 11905 kHz on the 25m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

You can also hear our programs on WRMI ( and WRN ( These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

Welcome to our new RFI Listeners Club members!  Michael Cunningham, from Brisbane, Australia; William Omoshola Joiner from Serrekunda, The Gambia; Ndongla Jerry Smith from Bamenda, Cameroon; Debakamal Hazarika, the president of the United Listeners Club in Assam, India, and four new members from Naogaon, Bangladesh: Shihab Ahmed, Sadman Shahorier, Ripa Akhter, and Shahanoaz Parvin.

Welcome one and all! If you would like to join the RFI Listeners Club, just send an e-mail to and I’ll get you signed up – it’s that easy!

This week’s quiz: On 17June, Aidan asked about the relationship between China and Taiwan, and the "One China" policy. That week another country changed diplomatic allegiances from Taiwan to China, leaving Taiwan with only about 20 countries in its diplomatic sphere. Aidan asked you to send in the answer to two questions: 1) Which country established diplomatic ties with China in mid-June, and 2) What is the “One China” policy?

The answer is: Panama, for the first question. Panama changed diplomatic allegiances from Taiwan to China on 12June. For the second question, the One China policy is the diplomatic acknowledgement of the People’s Republic of China's position that there is only one Chinese government, and that is Beijing. Any country that wants diplomatic relations with mainland China must break official ties with Taiwan.

The winners are: Husain Darbo from the west coast region of The Gambia. Husain sent his answer to the Sound Kitchen mobile phone – scroll down to the bottom of this page for information on how you can do that, too. Hailing from Lusaka, Zambia, there’s Mathias Phiri, and there’s three RFI Club members this week: Manisha Jain from Delhi, India; Abdul Mannan Teacher from Sirajganj, Bangladesh, and Michael Cunningham from Brisbane, Australia.

Congratulations winners!

Here’s the music you heard on this week’s program: Prokofiev: Lt Kijé Ste: “Troika” (Philharmonia Orchestra, Anatole Fistoulari, conductor); Chico Alvarez: “Val’ Carretero”.
