This week’s quiz: On 27 April, I asked you a question about Ukraine, which held its presidential election on 21 April. I asked you to send in the name of the winner and two unusual, or the first time for the country, things about him.
The answer is: Ukrainians elected Volodymyr Zelensky to serve as their sixth president. For the “firsts”: Volodymyr Zelensky is the country’s first president who is an actor; he has no political experience at all. As you have probably heard, Zelensky was immensely popular on a TV series called “Servant of the People”, which was about a history teacher who suddenly found himself as president. Well, guess what? Here’s an actor who suddenly found himself as president, and the name of his political party, is – you guessed it – “Servant of the People”.
The other first for Ukraine with Zelensky’s victory: he is Ukraine’s first Jewish leader.
Volodymyr Zelensky took his oath of office on 20 May.
The winners this week are: Umme Kulsom Khatun, a member of the Students Oriental Radio Club in Murshidabad, India; RFI Listeners Club members Samir Mukhopadhyay from Kolkat, India; Helmut Matt from Herbolzheim, Germany and Hans Verner Lollike from Hedehusene, Denmark. Finally, there’s Shahzad Shabbir, the president of the Pak France RFI International Listeners Club in District Sahiwal, Pakistan.
Here’s the music you heard on this week’s program: “Doo Be Doo” by Zolani Mahole, performed by Freshlyground; “Ukrainian Fantasy” composed by Maksim Popichuk and performed by the Maksim Popichuk ensemble; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; the rondo from the Clarinet Concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cornelius Meister, with clarinetist Arngunnur Árnadóttir; “Exultate, Jubilate”, again by Mozart, performed by soprano Regula Mühlemann with the Dresden Staatskapelle Festival Orchestra conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
Do you have a musical request? Send it to email@example.com
