Issued on: Modified:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Turkey's leaders yesterday, for talks focusing on the conflict in Syria but also on Turkey's stalled bid to join the European Union. Turkey, an associate member of the old European Economic Community since 1963, first sought to become an EU member in 1987 but did not begin formal accession talks until 2005. RFI spoke to Fadi Hakura, a Turkey analyst, who says that there are cultural obstacles to EU accession that could take decades to overcome.
