Sarkozy to scrap Bastille Day garden party

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to scrap the traditional 14 July Bastille Day party at the presidential palace in order to save money. Last year the party held on France’s national day cost the state more than 700,000 euros, according to an opposition Socialist politician.

Several members of Sarkozy’s Ump party said the Bastille Day bash will be cut as part of a series of budget-tightening measures to be announced next week.

French public finances have been under strain and Sarkozy recently urged his ministers to set an example by keeping their costs down.

Not all of them have been doing so of late. The state secretary in charge of the Paris region, Christian Blanc, has come under fire for using public funds to pay for 12,000 euros worth of Cuban cigars.
