Cold weather biting France should ease up soon

Europe’s frosty snap rolled on into Friday, with 15 French departments put on alert, and Eurostar traffic disrupted until Sunday. Icy rain is expected Saturday, while Sunday should deliver thawing conditions that will carry on until the middle of next week.


Friday morning was particularly bitter in France, with snowfall in the south-west, to Auvergne, the Lyon region and Burgundy.

In the worst affected areas, school transport was cancelled schools closed.

In Poland, 12 people died of cold overnight Thursday. These deaths bring to 30 the number of deaths in Poland in the last three days.

Despite Friday’s alerts, Météo France lifted its snow warning on 10 departments at noon.

Eurostar is ensuring a limited service between Paris and London until Sunday.

Some trains were cancelled Friday and others delayed for up to 90 minutes, with the company adding that trains for the next four days were fully booked.

Eurostar is urging ticketholders to delay their journeys if possible.
