France denounces ‘phoney’ Syrian election
Issued on: Modified:
French Foreign Affairs Minister Laurent Fabius on Tuesday denounced the Syrian presidential election as “phoney”, claiming that it will strengthen President Bashar al-Assad in fighting the opposition.
"In this election the choice was between Bashar and Bashar," Fabius said, government spokesperson Stéphane Le Foll told reporters. "This phoney election will serve to justify Bashar al-Assad's ability to continue the type of policies we all recognise - a merciless fight and keeping himself in power."
The armed Syrian opposition has denounced Tuesday’s election, which pits Assad against little-known opponents as a “farce” and the UN has said the three-year civil war will drag on because of it.
