The bodies of five newborn babies were found on Thursday in a house near Bordeaux, southwestern France.

The police found early on Thursday a body of a newborn in a thermal bag and later four more bodies of babies in a freezer in a house in Louchats, a city near Bordeaux.

The father, aged 40, was taken into custody while the mother, aged 35, was hospitalised.

The couple has two daughters aged 13 and 15.

According to a source close to the investigation, it was the father who initially found the first corpse.

Autopsies will be performed to determine whether the babies were born alive.

The worst case of infanticide in France dates back to 2010 when a mother admitted to killing eight of her babies.
