Syria rejects Arab League initiative
Issued on: Modified:
Damascus has rejected an Arab League initiative to send a joint United Nations-Arab peacekeeping force to Syria. The League at the weekend also severed all diplomatic and economic cooperation with the regime and decided to open contacts with the Syrian opposition. Russia, which backs the Syrian regime, says it is studying the Arab League plan and has called for a ceasefire. RFI spoke to an analyst in Damascus about whether this Arab initiative has changed the diplomatic balance.
