US Open finalist Pliskova teamed up with Strycova to defeat the French Open doubles champions 7-5 7-5 to spark celebration among the band of travelling Czech supporters in Strasbourg.

Earlier Garcia had beaten Pliskova in three sets in the singles to give France a 2-1 lead. But Strycova won a nervy encounter against Alizé Cornet 6-2 7-6 to level the best of five series.

The victory is the fifth Fed Cup title in six years and their 10th overall. Only the United States – who vaunt 17 titles – have been more successful in the 53 year history of the women’s team competition.

France had been seeking to win a third crown - the last of which came when captain Amelie Mauresmo inspired them to a 4-1 triumph over the United States 13 years ago.
