Who are we?
Abouts us
RFI doesn’t just broadcast in French, we teach and promote it too. Some listeners want to be able to converse in a language they don’t have the opportunity to practice every day. Others need to master French for work and require help getting more familiar with it. Many simply like French and French values. RFI has a team of specialist teaching and radio professionals to help.
Programmes
learning and improving
For those who’d like to improve their French and better understand the news, RFI’s journalists offer three daily shows explaining current affairs - and their context - in simple French.
RFI’s foreign language programmes allow you to familiarise yourself with French and improve your language skills. All series are bilingual and feature original concepts that adapt modern teaching methods to the radio. Programmes are also broadcast by RFI’s partners throughout the world and adapted for print by specialist editors.
Dedicated francophiles and those who’d like to perfect their French can tune into Yvan Amar twice a day on RFI in French. In his morning show “les mots de l’actualité », Yvan throws some light on a word or expression from the day’s news. His daily magazine “langage actuel” takes a deeper look at the evolution of French and its uses.
Multimedia resources
learning and teaching
Once lost in the airwaves after transmission, RFI material now has a permanent home on the internet. More than a million users already use our site, to learn for themselves or to liven up classes with real spoken French. Log on and you’ll find listening resources from RFI’s output alongside teaching tools and comprehension aids from the French language team.
Our website’s « La langue française » section offers one space for learners, another for teachers.
Learners should head for “apprendre,” where there’s a variety of activities based on the news in French, updated daily. You’ll also find listening exercises and you can click on “Comment vont les affaires” for on-line French lessons.
Teachers should opt for “enseigner,” for downloadable resources and information to help spice-up lessons with radio sound. A new section “prêt à l’emploi,” is devoted to oral exercises, with teaching notes and specialist articles. There are also resource files for classes and articles on language news and teaching.
Training and international co-operation
As the world’s premier international French-language radio broadcaster, RFI is instrumental in bringing French language and culture to a world audience. Along with our public and private partners, we put our radio and educational know-how at their service.
The promotion of French takes place first and foremost in schools across the world. For teachers, the radio offers a goldmine of authentic sounds to use in classes. That’s why we lead the “enseigner avec RFI” training sessions for teachers. Whether it’s in the shape of learning about the media or learning to understand spoken French, our staff offer you a behind the scenes look at the radio.
To share teaching methods, and to reward the most creative, the RFI le monde en français prize invites teachers to create an original lesson plan centred around an extract from one of our programmes. Each year ten finalists receive specialist teaching books while the winner is invited to Paris for a two week training course.
Finally, to promote French on local and educational radio, RFI offers its bilingual awareness and improvement of French series to overseas networks. Whatever the format, whatever the programme, our series are adaptable to the listeners’ language and can be broadcast on local, educational, national or associate stations.
