It was only one week after the European pharmaceutical fair in Madrid that a Spanish wholesaler, Mr Fernandez, who was passing through Paris, contacted the Paragem company to discuss the terms of a possible contract. Madame Leblanc preferred to meet him first, and invited him out for dinner with the sales representatives and Stéphane Petitbon, at a parisian restaurant. That morning, when I arrived at work, Françoise Vittel handed me an internal note that was addressed to me . Let me read it to you.

Dialogue 1

Note Interne De : Catherine Leblanc A : Danielle Danielle, Pouvez-vous SVP, Réserver une table pour 5 personnes au restaurant Balifol à Paris pour ce soir 20 heures ; Préciser l'adresse exacte de ce restaurant et les moyens d'accès.

Françoise Vittel explained to me that "SVP" was the abbreviation for « s’il vous plaît », please, and that « les moyens d’accès » indicated the means of transportation for getting to the restaurant. All I had to do was call the number 12 for directory assistance to find out the restaurant’s telephone number.

I had already forgotten the french telephone alphabet, which is nevertheless indispensable in business telephone calls ! Here are some examples :

Danielle :	Oui bien sûr ! soixante-dix-neuf... Donc quarante trois, soixante-dix-neuf...
Opératrice :	Treize, zero six.

I was still having a terrible time taking down telephone numbers, which are always read by groups of 2 digits : 4.3.7.9.1.3.0.6. en français : 43 79 13 06

A few minutes later, I was in front of my telephone, rather nervous at the idea of having a telephone conversation in French with a stranger !

Réceptionniste du restaurant :	Restaurant Balifol, Bonjour.
Danielle :	Bonjour. Je voudrais réserver une table, s'il vous plaît.
Réceptionniste :	Oui, pour quand ?
Danielle :	Pour aujourd'hui.
Réceptionniste :	Pour déjeuner ou pour dîner ?
Danielle :	Pour dîner.
Réceptionniste :	Combien de couverts ?
Danielle :	Pardon, vous pouvez répéter s'il vous plaît ?
Réceptionniste :	Combien de couverts ? Combien de personnes pour votre table ?
Danielle :	Une table pour 5 personnes.
Réceptionniste :	Pour 5 couverts donc. C'est à quel nom ?
Danielle :	Société Paragem.
Réceptionniste :	Vous pouvez épeler Paragem, s'il vous plaît ?
Danielle :	P comme Pierre - A comme Anatole - R comme Raoul - A comme Anatole - G comme Gaston - E comme Eugène - M comme Marcel.
Réceptionniste :	C'est noté. Cinq couverts pour la société Paragem.

Danielle :	Oui.

What a relief, I had done it ! Spelling a name in French was a real feat ! When the same letter is repeated twice, you say "Deux L" for example, and not L - L, or double L : V - I - 2L - I - E - R - S
