Even though more than 90 percent of the people of the Bakassi Peninsula are Nigerians, they now face the bitter choice of living under harsh Cameroonian rule or abandoning their homeland to live as refugees in Nigeria. The mainly peasant fishermen and their families are living in extreme poverty and hardship because their new environment is not conducive to their traditional way of life.
