Human rights activist Floribert Chebeya, found dead in the Democratic Republic of Congo with his hands tied, likely died of a cardiac arrest, a post-mortem report is suggesting.

The autopsy did not produce evidence giving a clear anatomical explanation for his death, said the autopsy, which was carried out by Dutch doctors on 11 June.

"The observations are nevertheless strongly in favour of a primary cause of death involving the heart," it added.

Chebeya disappeared at the beginning of June with his driver Fidèle Bazana after attempting to meet the Chief of Police, General Jonh Numbi.

The meeting never took place and his body was found the next day gagged and bound in the back seat of his car in the outskirts of the Congolese capital Kinshasa.

Chebeya was head of the group Voix des Sans Voix (VSV - Voice of the Voiceless).

The body of his driver has still not been found.
