Powerful Mexican druglord shot dead

Mexican security forces have shot dead one of the country’s most-wanted drug lords in a town near the United States border. Antonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, a leader of Mexico's powerful Gulf drug cartel, died after a lengthy gunbattle.

Cardenas Guillen, 48, also known as “Tony Tormenta”, is the latest in a growing number of high-profile gang leaders captured or killed by President Felipe Calderon’s armed forces, which are stationed throughout the country to battle traffickers.

Cardenas Guillen is the brother of imprisoned former leader Osiel Cardenas Guillen, and is believed to have run the powerful cartel along with Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez.

Gunfire first broke out about 11am local time in the Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville, Texas, and shootouts could reportedly be heard throughout the city for eight hours.

Three gunmen and two marines also reportedly died in the clashed, along with a soldier and a local reporter.
