French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has congratulated Donald Trump on winning the US presidential election. With an eye of next year's presidential election in France, leaders of her National Front (FN) hailed a victory against 'the system".

"Congratulations to the new president of the United States Donald Trump and to the free American people," Le Pen tweeted as the Republican candidate approached victory on Wednesday.

Le Pen, who had called for "anything but Clinton", has said that she has points in common with Trump, who rode to victory on a tide of opposition to what his supporters see as "elite politics", telling the US TV channel CNN in September "we don't take part in the system ... we won't take orders from any financial power or any interests of muntinationals".

The FN leader's estranged father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, told French radio that a Trump victory would prove that her strategy of "dedemonisation" is "an idiocy and that it's an impasse".

Her partner, FN vice-president Louis Aliot declared that "eight months of worldwide propaganda has been swept away by the polls and by the people."
