Nearly 30 die in accidental explosion in Sri Lanka

Nearly 30 people have been killed in Sri Lanka after an accident at an explosives depot. The explosives were being stored at a police station for safe-keeping and were being distributed to Chinese road builders when they went off.
The force of the blast completely destroyed the station in Karadiyanaru, a small fishing village, 375 miles from Colombo.
Staff at the nearest hospital, 15 kilometres away, say they felt the explosion. Most of the dead are thought to be policemen, although two road contractors are also thought to have died.
They were working for state-run China Overseas Holdings Limited, a construction company carrying out building work in the area.
