Indian cinema Sandalwood celebrates its 80th anniversary

The development of the iconic Kanteerava film studios in Bangalore India sparked the explosion of a regional industry of films produced in the south India state of Karnataka, in the regional Kannada language. Lesser known than Bollywood, this regional cinema known as Sandalwood celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, of bringing larger than life stories to the big screen that reflect the region's distinct language and culture to a loyal audience. But even as new Sandalwood producers attempt to take this brand of regional cinema beyond the state borders of Karnataka, and abroad, can Sandalwood fend off competition at home, from the multimillion dollar Bollywood industry?
