Extreme right-wing groups in India have felt emboldened by the mandate won by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and believe they now have more freedom of action. The sectarian violence and protests have had a significant impact on India’s image abroad and could undermine Modi’s drive to attract investors. But much of the intolerance and extremism is directed inwards, at India’s rich cultural and religious diversity. While attacks against minorities, and indeed writers and intellectuals have occurred in India before, this recent bout has been unprecedented. In the last of this four part series, our correspondent Murali Krishnan looks at a way forward.
