US air strikes conducted against Islamic State targets between September and February resulted in the deaths of 20 civilians and injured 11 others, the Pentagon said Friday.

"The preponderance of evidence indicates nine separate US air strikes in Iraq and Syria, between September 10, 2015 and February 2, 2016, have likely resulted in the death of 20 civilians and injuries to an additional 11 civilians," the US Central Command said in a statement.

The military uses the term "likely" as a matter of course in such announcements because it cannot always inspect blast sites, but the reality is officials are practically certain of the fatalities.
