Peng Shuai crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round on Thursday, piling on the misery for the Chinese star as she struggles to reignite her career following a back injury.
The former world number 14, a US Open semi-finalist two years ago, has seen her world ranking plunge to 264 after missing most of 2015 injured.
She lost 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 to US 18th seed Sloane Stephens in a rain-affected match carried over from Wednesday.
Wimbledon was the scene of one of Peng's greatest triumphs, when she won the 2013 women's doubles with Hsieh Su-Wei.
And she reached the last 16 for the third time in her last singles outing at the All England Club in 2014.
Peng, 30, has won just one tour-level match out of seven this year.
