Colombian court backs referendum on peace deal with FARC

Bogota (AFP) –

A peace deal being negotiated with FARC rebels will ultimately be subject to a referendum once mooted by the Colombian government, the constitutional court ruled.

Any final deal reached must be understood as a political decision, chief justice Maria Victoria Calle told reporters on Monday. He said that holding a vote on a peace deal does not mean, in and of itself, that the deal becomes part of the Constitution or sets Colombian legal precedent.
