Goya-award winning first film "10.000 KM" comes to France
Just one week to go before the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, RFI takes a look at film production in the Spanish-language regions of the world.
The Cannes Film Festival 2015 is just one week away. Latin American and Spanish cinema has been more or less well-represented in recent years. Across the different sections and between the parallel events, Director's Fortnight and Critic's Week.
Why would 2015 be different? Well, a Mexican film, by Michel Franco called Chronic squeezed into the offical line-up this year. And in the Un Certain Regard section Mexican David Pablos The Chosen Ones, as well as Colombian José Luis Rugeles, Argentinian-Colombian co-production, Alias Maria. Thierry Frémaux, the festival's artistic director says "it was tougher to select films from the region this year", but "we can still hope for a stronger showing in the future. It has a lot to do with difficult economic times".
Some compelling and beautiful films have come out of Spain in recent years. Frémaux says it's the same, the artistic and technical potential is there, but not the material means. Of course, nothing holds back artistic expression, even if it may not be given full rein in such belt-tightened times. Young-film-makers particularly, with something to say, are making full use of cost-cutting new technologies. This week, we meet Carlos Marques-Marcet, a director who describes his award-winning 1st feature film 10.000 KM as very-low budget.
What can you do to keep love alive when you are oceans apart? Questions also about virtual gadgets, how useful they are, and where their limits lie. Can computers, mobile phones and even social networks replace human contact? Do they distort it?
