Police officer drowns in Seine

A 25-year-old police officer drowned whilst trying to save a driver who had jumped in the River Seine in Melun early Sunday morning.
Thirty divers and a helicopter were used to recover the body of police officer Nicolas Debarge.
Police say that they are still looking for the body of the man he tried to rescue.
The incident is reported to have occurred after the driver caused a minor road accident. He fled the scene immediately afterwards and jumped into the Seine.
Debarge jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue him, but both men were taken under by strong currents.
The mayor of Melun, Gerard Millet, said Debarge “had an excellent work record”. Debarge was also a voluntary fire-fighter in Savigny-le-Temple, where he lived.
