Issued on: Modified:
The 25-year-old suffered severe head injury following a crash during the Japanese Grand Prix.
Bianchi, who drives for the Marussia F1 team, went off the track on lap 44 of the 53 lap race and smashed into a crane that was recovering Adrian Sutil’s car which had earlier went off at the same place.
The 25-year old was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
"Jules is seriously injured," Bianchi's father Philippe told France 3 television. "He is undergoing surgery for a head injury and we will need to wait 24 hours to know any more on his condition."
Formula One's governing FIA said in a statement that Bianchi had "suffered a severe head injury" and would be monitored from the intensive care unit following his operation.
The rain-hit race was stopped two laps following Bianchi’s crash.
