The Montmartre cabaret that was a crucible of modern art

Audio 09:04

One of the best-known images from Paris is the poster from the Chat Noir, a black cat on a yellow and orange background, advertising the cabaret that was a key part of life in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century. The Chat Noir attracted painters, writers and musicians, many of whom went on to develop modern art in the early 20th century. A new exhibition, Autour du Chat Noir, at the Montmartre Museum tries to show the influence of the cabaret at the time and afterwards.
